Woods Edge Traffic Light Approved

Latest Update:
Permits are in place
Electrical/mechanical work is ready
Mast arm is on order and should arrive in April (Yes, 2009!).
Looks like the mast arm is the current holdup. Once that is delivered, install should go quickly (Doesn't 'quickly' have its own unique measure in government terms??????)

May 13, 2008

Mr. Stan Cann, Florida Department of Transportation, District 1 Secretary, advised Collier County that a new traffic signal has been approved for installation at Woods Edge Parkway and US41.

The location is just south of Bonita Beach Road and US41 intersection.  This location borders both Lee and Collier Counties.  The light will be installed by Collier County and maintained by Lee County.

Bob Tipton, with Collier County Transportation Department, reports that the light is in the 'permitting stage' right now.

The signal is anticipated to be installed early in 2009.  The mast arm to house the light has been ordered by Collier County Transportation Department, pending FDOT permit approval.

This traffic light marked the advent of Citizens Transportation Coalition's efforts.  With persistent 'encouragement' from the CTC,  FDOT re-visited the 'traffic warrant' study process and finally approved the need for a signal at this dangerous intersection.

The traffic light will be a most welcome addition to residents of North Naples.  It also serves as proof that "Persistence Pays".
Kudos to the many citizens who attended meetings, hosted meetings and spoke up in support of making this intersection safe for their neighborhood!!!

Also, in North Naples

CTC strongly encouraged officials at Collier County Transportation Department to take steps to make the intersection of Wiggins Pass Road and US41 safer and easier to navigate.

You can see the new asphalt in this photo.  Prior to the addition of a dedicated right turn lane (new asphalt with right turn arrows), the old lane (now the middle lane) was the right turn lane.

This forced cars going straight to be in the far left lane.  If they proceeded straight through the light instead of turning left, they would have driven straight into the oncoming lane of traffic.

The additional lane served to not only provide a better traffic pattern, it created  better alignment for cars proceeding straight through this intersection.

Also, as you can see from the new asphalt at the bottom of the picture, the approach lane was increased.

While this entire intersection continues to be a 'work in progress', a better traffic pattern has been temporarily created for those approaching from Wiggins Pass Road.  We continue to keep abreast of county funding and county priorities for this intersection.

In other words, concerning this intersection .....
They haven't heard the last from CTC!!!

Meanwhile, at Carlton Lakes

CTC was asked to intervene on behalf of Carlton Lakes.  There was a hazardous condition inadvertently created by the  additional lanes added to Immokalee.

CTC contacted Collier DOT and suggested that new lane markings needed to be in place ... sooner rather than later ... on Immokalee Road turning North onto Livingston.

Not sure if CTC can take credit for the DOT quick response, but the lane markings were added PDQ (by government standards).

I'm just sayin' ............
